Irish Prints - Monastic Sites of Ireland

Ancient Monastic Sites can be found in every corner of Ireland. From Saint Kevin's Cross in Glendalough (County Wexford) to the beehive huts in Ventry Irish, history abounds. The most famous, Clonmacnoise (County Offaly, south of Athlone) is pictured here. In Ireland, the Celtic Cross has long been a symbol of Christianity. Irish legend has it that Saint Patrick himself designed the Celtic Cross by combining the symbol of Christianity with the pagan sun cross.

The monastery was founded in 640 by Saint Finian the Leper and was occupied for approximately 850 years. It is said that the name of the lake, which here so gently reflects its image, was named, Lough Leane ( Lake of Learning) because the monastery was located on one of its islands.
